Randy Frykas is an award-winning filmmaker specializing in documentary and commercial productions. He has over 20 years of experience on various TV series, documentaries, live broadcast productions, as well as his own films.
Randy began his career developing and refining his storytelling skills as an editor on over sixty productions. He earned editing credits on productions airing nationally on CTV, CBC, Global TV, APTN, and Sportsnet. His next challenge was to hit the road to develop as a director. These experiences took him around Canada, including remote northern communities, across the USA, Dominican Republic, throughout Europe, and into the Peruvian Amazon.
Trusted to capture stories on his own, Randy often takes on the roles of director, DP, and field producer for various clients. His eye for composition, precise detail to story, and ability to connect with subjects enables him to capture authentic and compelling moments in creative ways.
These talents are on display is his documentary Outdoor Hockey Club. Randy spent an entire winter capturing the sights, sounds, and stories of outdoor hockey around rinks in Yukon, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Leading up to filming, he spent months researching various locations and stories to feature. The project caught on, growing the ‘OHC’ Instagram to over 3K followers and receiving national media coverage.
He also captured the attention of Warren Miller Entertainment and the 2023 Outside Awards. After reviews from a judging panel including Academy Award winner Jimmy Chin, his film won the ‘Purpose” Category. Then, to decide the People’s Choice winner, the film joined Warren Miller’s “All-Time” Tour for screenings in over 200 cities in Canada, US, and UK. Up against two other skiing films on a ski film tour, the audiences voted, and Outdoor Hockey Club ended up winning by a landslide.
Randy continues to freelance on various productions while discussions continue to move Outdoor Hockey Club to a series format and include locations in the USA, Finland, and Canada.
